Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, first written of the plays in August Wilson’s Pittsburgh Cycle, explores the unrelenting realities facing an African-American blues superstar during the cold Chicago winter in 1927. As each band member struggles to establish his or her respective place in the music industry, a harrowing process of self-discovery ensues. Wilson’s unique storytelling illuminates themes of survival -- professionally, economically, physically -- and the fragile preservation of an oppressed soul.
