New! THE CHANGING FACE OF AID AND NGO’S IN DEVELOPMENT (January 29, 4:00 pm) Non-governmental organizations (NGOs) have long played a role as reliable systems of support and vehicles of empowerment for some of the world’s most vulnerable populations. Today, however, with budgetary cutbacks, the growing capacity of civil society in poorer countries, and increasing private sector involvement, the landscape of development is changing. What does this mean for the relevance and future of the NGO community? The speaker at this event is Sam Worthington, President and CEO of InterAction, the nation’s largest alliance of relief and development nongovernmental organizations working overseas. Previously, he served as Chief Executive Officer of Plan USA, a global, child-focused development NGO that works in 62 countries. Mr. Worthington’s numerous leadership roles include the White House Task Force on Global Development and Poverty, Chairing the global NGO Impact Initiative on behalf of the office of the UN Special Envoy for Tsunami Recovery under President Clinton, and as a founder of the Hope for African Children Initiative (HACI). This event is sponsored by the Global Human Development Program and will take place on Tuesday, January 29 from 4:00 to 5:30 in the ICC Executive Conference Room, ICC 701. A reception will follow in the McGhee Library. RSVP: http://www.eventbrite.com/event/5244159422. |
