U.S. Department of Treasury: Office of Financial Stability Information Session with Daniel Schmerin

The U.S. Department of Treasury ('Treasury') created the Office of Financial Stability ('OFS') in order to manage the Troubled Assets Relief Program ('TARP') established pursuant to the Emergency Economic Stabilization Act ('EESA') of 2008. Under EESA, Congress authorized $700 billion dollars for TARP in order to respond to the severe financial crisis facing our country. To carry out its duties under the law, Treasury has developed a number of programs to stabilize our financial system and the housing market, including but not limited to the Capital Purchase Program, Asset Guarantee Program, Auto Industry Financing Program, Making Home Affordable, Consumer and Business Lending Initiative, and Public-Private Investment Program. Daily responsibilities of OFS staff range from general program implementation and asset management to compliance, risk management, operations, legislative affairs, and public affairs.
