The return of the United States to membership in the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) after an absence of 19 years was an historic event for U.S. diplomacy, as well as for UNESCO's worldwide mission, especially that of achieving Education for All by 2015. The purpose of this Conference is to discuss the important role America’s colleges and universities can play in achieving Education For All (EFA) by 2015. EFA is a major international effort coordinated by UNESCO to make the benefits of universal primary education and life-long learning accessible to every person in every nation, especially in countries where the need is greatest. The challenge is enormous; over 800 million people cannot read and write and more than 103 million children are not in school. This is an opportunity for working scholars from many colleges, universities, and learned societies in the United States to learn about and reflect on possible opportunities to engage with EFA and to dialogue with U.S. government officials, UNESCO experts, foundations and other organizations. |
