Please join us for the Oliver Tambo lecture and reception with guest speaker His Excellency Trevor A. Manuel, MP. Before taking over his current position as Minister of National Planning for the Republic of South Africa, Mr. Trevor Manuel headed two other ministries within South Africa’s government: He was Minister of Trade and Industry from 1994 to 1996 and Minister of Finance from 1996 to 2009. He held the latter position through the presidencies of Nelson Mandela, Thabo Mbeki and Kgalema Motlanthe and was one of the country’s longest serving finance ministers. Shortly after the inauguration of President Jacob Zuma, Mr. Manuel became the Chairperson of the National Planning Commission of the Republic of South Africa in May 2009. He has also been a Member of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the African National Congress (ANC) since 1991. After matriculating in 1973, he studied Civil and Structural Engineering. Mr. Manuel entered public life in 1981 as the General Secretary of the Cape Areas Housing Action Committee. In 1994 he was elected Member of Parliament. In the same year, the World Economic Forum selected him as a 'Global Leader for Tomorrow'.
