The proliferation of publications and programs about Islam in recent years might lead one to believe that in the West we know more now that we ever did about Muslims. Yet so much of this production lacks the critical element of personal experience, relying instead on broad generalizations and abstractions, and on an implicit belief that history is destiny—even when our knowledge of that history is sketchy and frequently veers into caricature. In this forum, three Jesuits who have lived and worked with Muslims over many years in various parts of the world reflect on our future together.
