CROSS-LINGUISTIC CHALLENGES IN L2 READING: WHEN THE ORTHOGRAPHY IS NOT THE SAME

The ultimate goal of reading is to construct text meaning based on visually encoded information. As such, it entails extracting linguistic information directly from print and integrating the extracted information into larger text units, such as phrases and sentences. Reading thus relies on linguistic knowledge and its development is affected by how language elements are graphically encoded in the writing system. First-language (L1) reading studies have demonstrated that learning to read proceeds differently, requiring a distinct set of sub-skills, in typologically diverse languages. Such variations have significant implications for second-language (L2)reading research. Because it involves two languages, L2 reading is believed to be cross-linguistic, entailing continual interactions between transferred L1 sub-skills and L2 print input, as well as incessant adjustments in accommodating the disparate demands each language imposes.

In this talk, I will explain how L2 reading development is constrained by language-specific demands both within and across languages and how such dual-language constraints result in systematic variations in L2 reading sub-skills. I will then discuss their implications for L2 reading instruction.

Professor Koda is an internationally recognized researcher on issues in L2 readings. She is the author of Insights into second language reading: A cross-linguistic approach, 2005, CUP and editor of Reading and language learning, 2007, Blackwell and Learning to read across languages, 2007, Erlbaum. Her work has appeared in numerous journals including Cognition, SSLA, Memory & Language.
