Six week session. No experience is required to participate. Wear something comfortable, in which you can move comfortably.
About Tai Chi Tai Chi is a mind-body practice that originated in China as a martial art. In this practice the body moves slowly and mindfully, coordinated with the breath and meditation, enhancing the flow of vital energy (ch'i, or qi) throughout the body.
In practical terms, Tai Chi massages the internal organs, promotes the exchange of air in the lungs, assists the digestive system to work better, reduces stress, and increases awareness. Tai Chi is a weight-bearing, low-impact form of exercise that can strengthen the bones, enhance leg muscle strength, coordination, and flexibility, and improve physical balance to lower risk of falls. It can ease pain and stiffness from arthritis, amplify the health effects of meditation, improve sleep, and promote overall wellness.
Tai Chi is simple yet elegant, fun to do, and easy to learn at a basic level that retains all of the health benefits. All are welcome.
About the Instructor Dr. Paul Cote has 20 years experience in tai chi chuan (taiji quan), and in two other closely-related Chinese internal martial arts (xing-yi quan, ba gua zhang), as a practitioner, field researcher, scholar, and instructor. He has more than 30 years experience in Okinawan karate and in the study of various transcultural holistic health practices. These activities have been blended over the years for teaching purposes with his post graduate academic training in physiology, immunology, endocrinology, and nutritional metabolism. Dr. Cote is an expert of 10 years in Wu style taiji quan emanating from Beijing, and of 20 years in Yang style style taiji quan emanating from Taiwan. He has also developed and taught simplified methods of tai chi practice suitable for all that are based on these traditional methods.
