'Specialized Astrocytes and Adult Neurogenesis'
John K. Young, PhD Professor, Department of Anatomy Howard University College of Medicine
Adult neurogenesis in specialized regions in the adult brain appears to be important for learning and memory formation and seems to be deficient in older individuals and in individuals with Alzheimer's disease. My research focuses on the role of specialized non-neural cells (astrocytes) in adult neurogenesis and in aging-related defects in this process.
