The 'New Zealand Wars' period of New Zealand's history has generated a substantial literature since 1861 when one of the first texts appeared - 'One of England's Little Wars' by Octavius Hadfield. Professor Keenan's address will briefly summarize that literature, and its main themes, before discussing the content and focus of his recent book, 'Wars Without End. The Land Wars in Nineteenth Century New Zealand.' In this address, Professor Keenan will present his main argument, that the wars were primarily about land, and will position that argument within the current Maori and New Zealand historiography. About the author: Professor Keenan was born in New Plymouth, New Zealand, and is of Te Atiawa descent. He completed a PhD in Maori history at Massey University, Palmerston North, in 1994 and lectured in 19th Century New Zealand history between 1994 and 2004. In 2005, he was appointed to his current position, Associate Professor of Maori Studies at Victoria University, in Wellington. |
