The Boredom of Fat Books: Adalbert Stifter’s Der Nachsommer (Indian Summer) Explores the problematic of boredom as an aesthetic experience in the nineteenth century Habsburg writer Adalbert Stifter, in particular in his lengthy novel Der Nachsommer. Taking my cues from a quote by Thomas Mann that in Stifter, “boredom becomes sensational, which is really in the most beautiful sense uncanny,” I read the ritualized, repetitive, and descriptive language of the novel against the backdrop of various notions of boredom and how that notion is connected in Stifter’s text to notions of work and violence as a basis for the uncanny.
