Title: 'Disenchanted Religions: Disenchantment and secularization from the Axial Age to the New Religious Political Movements'

Abstract : The rise of new religious political movements in the Middle-East and India has challenged the secularization narrative, the hypothesis formulated on the basis of the European experience, that, on the long term, modernization and secularization are going hand in hand. This presentation will outline a new political history of religion from the Axial Age to the present, arguing that the return of “political theology” is best understood by dissociating secularization from the larger and more universal process of disenchantment (Entzauberung) first theorized by Max Weber in his sociology of religions. The question of the place of the Sacred in the public sphere will also provide us with an opportunity to engage in a critical discussion of more contemporary works such as those of Martin Heidegger, Charles Taylor, Marcel Gauchet or Jürgen Habermas.

About the speaker: Renaud Fabbri is a political scientist from Versailles Public Institutions Research Center. He received a Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Versailles-Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines (France), a M.A. in Comparative Religion from Miami University (OH, USA) and a M.A. in philosophy from Paris-La Sorbonne IV (France). He is specialized in Political Theory and in History of Ideas. His work focuses on the theories of secularization, the relation between Political Theology and Modernization, Democratization Theories, the Radical Right in Europe and the New Religious Political Movements in the Middle East and India.
